Meet our new Social Clubs Team Leader

Welcome to a new term of Social Clubs!

My name is Elanore Weller and I am very happy to be announcing my new role as Social Clubs Team Leader at AES as part of a new phase towards exciting changes we have been working on in readiness for the new term and beyond.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to be facilitating the social clubs. I am a registered teacher with a BA in Psychology. I have specialised in working with children with additional needs and I also have over 10 years of experience working with children from babies to teens in a number of different childcare, educational and support settings.

Our social groups start this week on Tuesday the 1st of May> We have our new location in Greenwood and our other groups will be running in Balcatta and Armadale during the school term.

My studies taught me the huge variables that exist with children on the spectrum and how crucial it is to understand and respect the social preferences of individual children. For some, friendships were important; for others, not so much. Some preferred to have one or two friends, rather than a large social circle.

Socialisation can be problematic for autistic children in schools, wanting to join in with games in the playground, but don’t know how to go about it. Or they had been unable to take part in group activities because of sensory issues. The older children I taught would tell me that they struggled to cope with the social complexities of certain classroom activities – such as having marks read out loud, or having attention drawn to them for one reason or another. The young adults also reported seeing a change in dynamics as they and their peers became older, with the other children becoming less tolerant and accepting.

Therefore the program development we have been working towards, in order to address the many and diverse needs of our children, are a centre of focus in how my team and I will be approaching the new term based plan. Developing the formula for our social clubs, from the planning stages through to the practicalities of teaching the ‘how to..,’ whilst challenging has been a wonderful and exciting experience. The Team and I can’t wait to begin to teach this curriculum which is designed to work in stages thorough a child’s developmental needs.

I am very enthusiastic towards our new adventure this term!

If you have any questions regarding the new curriculum and program development, please give me a call on 9240 5800. I would love to hear from you.
